Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim ophthalmic solution is indicated for the treatment of surface ocular bacterial infections, including acute bacterial conjunctivitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis, caused by susceptible strains of the following organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus viridans, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis.
In mild to moderate infections, instill one drop in the affected eye(s) every 3 hours (maximum of 6 doses per day) for a period of 7 to 10 days.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze out a drop.
- Close the eye for 1 to 2 minutes with gentle pressure on the inside corner of the eye.
No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment.
If a dose is missed, it should be administered as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular dosing schedule resumed.
Store at 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Protect from light.
- Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim ophthalmic solution is not for injection.
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi.
Patients should be advised not to touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination.
Contact lenses should be removed prior to instillation of the ophthalmic solution. Lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes following administration.
The most frequent adverse reactions to Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim ophthalmic solution are localized allergic reactions, including itching, swelling, and conjunctival erythema.
